Training

Because Jujitsu is different from most other martial arts (in that it doesn't rely much on hitting power or speed) it requires a different set of ways to training for it. Below are some of the ways a practitioner can get the most out of their ability when performing Jujitsu.

Stamina

Stamina plays a huge part in how well a person performs Jujitsu moves and techniques. Because the fight is nearly always on the ground, it is much more difficult to manoeuvre the body around the opponents and this uses up much energy. Other reasons are because when the other opponent is on top of you, all their weight is pushing down and can make it very difficult to breathe and it takes much strength to move them. In time though, once a person becomes more able at Jujitsu, strength plays less a part in manoeuvring around/the opponent.
There are many ways to improve your stamina for Jujitsu, the most obvious one being just to keep on practising Jujitsu and with time your stamina will improve. To help speed it up, you can go:
  • Running / Jogging. This helps greatly with leg strength, which is important in Jujitsu for techniques such as trips and takedowns.
  • Swimming. This does not impact your joints as does running and can help all parts of your body to become stronger and suppler.
  • Cycling. I personally find this the most enjoyable and it a great workout for the legs!

Strength

Many people say this attribute is not as necessary as having good stamina, but it is still important, especially if you grapple with much larger people. The best kind of strength for Jujitsu is core strength, where one is able to move their weight around fast and is strong enough to support their weight – It's no good being able to lift massive weights if you can't move yourself on the ground quickly! A much smaller person is likely to move faster, such as the early days of the UFC when Royce Gracie defeating much larger, cumbersome opponents.
Exercises such as weight lifting on the chest, arms and back are ideal for Jujitsu. Core strength exercises that exercise multiple muscle groups are recommended, such as:
  • Chin-ups
  • Push-ups
  • Dips
  • Body balance exercises

There are many more exercises to increase core strength, you can find more here.

Speed

Speed is not so much an issue with Jujitsu because each fighters speed when grappling on the ground depends a lot on how strong they are to be able to move their weight around. It is sometimes important in areas such as takedowns but again, leg strength helps with this kind of speed.
